Frequently Asked Questions
Question
What types of procedures are eligible for the study?
The three types of cases included CARES are breast lumpectomy, inguinal hernia, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Question
What if a lap cholecystectomy includes an intraoperative cholangiogram or common bile duct exploration? Can they still be eligible?
Yes, both intraoperative cholangiogram and common bile duct exploration may be included with lap cholecystectomy in CARES.
Question
What if a participant having a breast biopsy also has another procedure at the same time? Can they still participate? Don’t they require opioids?
Breast lumpectomy includes cases with lumpectomy, as well as breast biopsy, magnetic seed localization, and/or sentinel lymph node biopsy. Based on discussions with our surgeon stakeholder, these patients are anticipated to have adequate pain control with either study arm in CARES.
Question
What if a participant is having a breast biopsy and they typically don’t get opioids or they typically get less than the amount in the orderset?
This has been discussed with the investigator team, the funding agency (PCORI), and the Stakeholder Advisory Board, which includes patients and other representatives. Patients are not required in the study to take pain medications that are prescribed to them.
Question
What if a participant is taking over-the-counter (non-prescription) NSAIDs?
If a participant is taking over-the-counter NSAIDs, it becomes an exclusion if they take the medication more than 8 days out of the last 30 days.
